Lost or stolen driving licence
A new licence is only issued after the loss has been confirmed in writing. If the old one is found again, it must be handed back.
The federal rule
In the event of loss, a new learner licence or a new driving licence may only be issued if the loss is confirmed in writing (art. 24f para. 2 OAC).
If the replaced licence is later found, it must be returned to the authority within fourteen days.
The procedure
Written confirmation of the loss is made to the competent cantonal road traffic office, which then arranges for a duplicate to be issued (the form and fee are specific to each canton). People domiciled abroad are covered by a separate provision (art. 24h OAC).
In the event of theft
Some cantons may additionally require a theft report filed with the police before the duplicate is issued.
