Moped licence (category M) in Switzerland

Special category M covers mopeds, with different rules depending on their speed and weight.

Minimum age: 14

The minimum age for special category M is 14. The M licence also authorises driving special category F and G vehicles.

Fast moped: M licence at any age

The fast moped (30 km/h from the motor alone, up to 45 km/h with pedal assistance, maximum power 1 kW, maximum total weight 200 kg) requires the M licence from age 14, with no later exemption. This category includes the fast electric bike and the traditional moped.

Light moped: M licence from age 14 to 15, then none from age 16

The light moped (25 km/h with a seat, or 20 km/h without a seat, maximum power 0.50 kW) is ridden with the M licence from age 14 to 15, then with no licence at all from age 16. Heavy moped: M licence at any age

The heavy moped (multi-track vehicle, 25 km/h, maximum power 2 kW, maximum total weight 450 kg) requires the M licence from age 14, with no exemption at age 16.
