Get your driving licence in Switzerland

Nine steps lead from the first eyesight test to the definitive driving licence.

The steps, in order

  1. First aid course, for categories A, B, A1 and B1.
  2. Eyesight test.
  3. Submitting the application for the learner licence.
  4. Basic theory test.
  5. Road safety course (traffic theory).
  6. Accompanied driving, with or without an accompanying driver depending on the category.
  7. Practical test.
  8. Probationary licence, for a three-year probationary period.
  9. Further training course, within twelve months of the probationary licence, before obtaining the definitive licence.

Where to start

The starting point depends on the category you are aiming for: see the driving licence categories hub for the minimum age and the conditions specific to each category.

Learning to drive in practice

The steps above are the administrative procedures. To find out how the practical learning itself works - driving school or a private accompanying driver, what a lesson looks like - see learning to drive and driving lessons.
