Truck licence in Switzerland: C1, C and CE

Three categories cover trucks in Switzerland, depending on their total weight and whether a trailer is attached.

Sub-category C1: from 3500 to 7500 kg

Sub-category C1 covers motor cars (other than category D) with a total weight exceeding 3500 kg but not exceeding 7500 kg, as well as C1 + trailer combinations up to 750 kg. The minimum age is 18.

Category C: over 3500 kg

Category C covers motor cars (other than category D) with a total weight exceeding 3500 kg, as well as C + trailer combinations up to 750 kg. The minimum age is 18.

Category CE: truck with a heavy trailer

Category CE covers combinations of a category C towing vehicle and a trailer over 750 kg. The minimum age is 18.

Exception for vocational training

Since 15 July 2023, the learner licence for categories C and CE can be issued from age 17 completed to people undertaking the "Heavy vehicle driver (federal VET diploma)", "Automotive maintenance mechanic (federal VET diploma)" (commercial vehicles track) or "Automotive mechatronics technician (federal VET diploma)" (commercial vehicles track) training. They may sit the test for categories B, BE, C or CE at the earliest six months before turning 18, with the licence only issued once they have turned 18.

Driving licence and professional transport

The C or CE licence grants the right to drive the vehicle. On its own it is not sufficient to carry out professional goods transport: see the OACP and certificate of competence page for this separate qualification.
