Learner driving licence
The learner licence is obtained after the basic theory test and remains valid for a limited period depending on the category.
Documents required
The application for the learner licence must be sent to the competent authority together with:
- an application form completed in full and truthfully;
- a certificate confirming complete attendance of a first aid course, where required for the category concerned;
- a recent passport photo.
Issuance
The learner licence is issued following a successful basic theory test, except for categories exempted from it.
The category A learner licence is limited to motorcycles whose power does not exceed 35 kW and whose power-to-weight ratio does not exceed 0.2 kW/kg, except for certain exemptions (vocational training as a motorcycle mechanic - federal VET diploma (CFC) -, motorcycle police officers, traffic experts). A category A learner licence without this restriction can then be issued to persons who have held a power-restricted category A driving licence for at least two years and can demonstrate an irreproachable driving record.
Period of validity
- 4 months for category A and subcategory A1 (extended to 12 months if the basic practical training is successfully completed);
- 12 months for subcategory B1 and special category F;
- 24 months for all other categories.
Validity also expires after three consecutive failures of the practical test, unless a subsequent test confirms the candidate's fitness to drive.
