Eyesight test for the driving licence
A basic examination of visual abilities is required before certain licence applications.
When is the eyesight test required?
Before submitting an application for a learner licence or a valid driving licence, a candidate who does not already hold one must have undergone a basic examination of their visual abilities for:
- an application for a learner licence of category A or B, subcategory A1, subcategory B1, or special category F;
- an application for a driving licence of special category M or G.
Who can carry out this test?
The examination must be carried out by a doctor holding a federal diploma or a recognised foreign diploma who practises in Switzerland, or by a qualified optician or a BSc optometrist who practises in Switzerland.
What is checked?
The test covers visual acuity, the visual field, and eye mobility (diplopia).
Period of validity
The eyesight test must not be more than 24 months old at the time the application is submitted.
