Practical driving test

What the expert checks
Through the practical test, the traffic expert checks whether the candidate is able, even in a difficult traffic situation, to drive in accordance with the rules of the road, anticipating hazards and showing consideration for other road users.
Special requirement for category B before age 20
Candidates for a category B driving licence who obtained their learner licence before the age of 20 must have held it for at least one year to be admitted to the practical test. This requirement does not apply to people following the professional training programmes "Heavy vehicle driver" (Federal VET Diploma), "Motor vehicle maintenance mechanic" (Federal VET Diploma, commercial vehicles orientation), "Motor vehicle mechatronics technician" (Federal VET Diploma, commercial vehicles orientation), or "Light vehicle driver" (Federal VET Certificate).
Who is exempt from the practical test?
- holders of a category B or sub-category B1 licence who wish to obtain sub-category A1 and have successfully completed the basic practical instruction;
- people who wish to obtain a licence in special categories G or M, subject to a test ordered if there is doubt about their fitness to drive;
- holders of a category C or sub-category C1 licence who wish to obtain sub-category D1.
If gaps are identified
If it turns out that the candidate has insufficient knowledge of traffic rules during the practical test, the admission authority orders a new test on basic theory.
