Theory test for the driving licence
The basic theory test checks that the candidate knows the traffic rules before receiving their learner licence.
Test content
The basic theory test allows the competent authority to determine whether the candidate has the required knowledge. The cantons develop the exam questions together with FEDRO and may delegate this task to third parties.
Candidates for special categories F, G and M take a basic theory test adapted to the specific features of the vehicle category.
When can it be taken?
Candidates may take the basic theory test at the earliest one month before reaching the minimum age required for the category concerned.
Who is exempt?
- candidates for a licence of category A, B, C or D, or subcategory A1, B1, C1 or D1, who already hold a licence of one of these categories or subcategories;
- candidates for special category F who already hold a licence of special category G;
- candidates for categories BE, CE or DE, or subcategories C1E or D1E, who already hold the licence required for the towing vehicle.
If the learner licence is cancelled
Anyone submitting a new application for a learner licence after their previous licence was cancelled must retake the basic theory test.
What about trucks and coaches?
Candidates for categories C or D, or subcategories C1 or D1, must also pass an additional theory test on knowledge specific to these vehicles before the practical test.
