Motorhome licence in Switzerland: it all depends on the weight

There is no "motorhome" licence category as such: the vehicle's total weight determines the required licence, exactly as for a commercial vehicle.

Motorhome up to 3500 kg: B licence

The vast majority of motorhomes built on a van or light chassis base fall under category B (total weight at most 3500 kg, at most eight seats in addition to the driver's). This is the same licence used for a car, with no additional training.

Motorhome from 3500 to 7500 kg: C1 licence

A heavier motorhome, particularly an integrated model built on a heavy-duty chassis, can exceed 3500 kg in total weight. Between 3500 and 7500 kg, it falls under sub-category C1, distinct from the B licence.

Motorhome over 7500 kg: C licence

Beyond 7500 kg in total weight, the motorhome falls under category C, like a heavy goods vehicle.

Where to find the determining weight?

The total weight to take into account is the one shown on the vehicle's registration document (permitted total weight), not the unladen weight. A motorhome fitted out with heavy equipment (full tanks, solar panels, bike racks) can cross a category threshold without this being visible to the naked eye: in case of doubt, the registration document is authoritative.
