First aid course for the driving licence
Often called the "Samaritan course," this course is mandatory before registering for the basic theory test for certain categories.
For which categories is it mandatory?
When registering for the basic theory test, a candidate for a driving licence of category A or B, or subcategory A1 or B1, must present a certificate of complete attendance of a first aid course for injured persons.
Course content
The course covers in particular:
- the safety measures to take at the scene of an accident and how to alert the emergency services;
- the measures to take until the doctor arrives, to maintain the physiological functions necessary for survival;
- the correct positioning of injured persons, artificial respiration for injured persons who are no longer breathing, how to stop severe bleeding, and the basics of chest compressions.
The organisation and programme of the course, as well as the requirements imposed on instructors, must be approved by FEDRO.
Certificate and validity
The certificate is issued by an institution recognised by FEDRO and is only granted to persons who have completed the entire course. It must not be more than six years old at the time of the application for the learner licence.
Who is exempt from this course?
- holders of a driving licence of one of the categories or subcategories mentioned above;
- doctors, dentists and veterinarians;
- nursing staff holding a diploma or a certificate of competence;
- instructors who give first aid courses;
- any person able to prove that they have already received first aid training at an institution recognised by FEDRO.
