What age do you need to ride a bicycle or an electric bike?

From age 6 to ride a bicycle alone on a main road, with no minimum age set elsewhere provided the child can operate the pedals. An electric bike, however, requires the special category M licence from age 14.

Standard bicycle: age 6 to ride alone on a main road

A child under 6 may only ride a bicycle on a main road if accompanied by a person aged at least 16. From age 6, they may ride there alone. On other roads, the law sets no minimum age: the only requirement is being able to operate the pedals.

Electric bike: category M licence from age 14

Both the slow electric bike (assistance ≤ 25 km/h) and the fast electric bike (assistance ≤ 45 km/h) require the special category M licence from age 14.
